Sun’s GlassFish web platform

Most of we probably very well known to the term LAMP, a solution bundle of software, usually free and open source software, used to run dynamic Web sites or servers. Since the original expansion of this stack was Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (python, Perl etc. programming language) the acronyms made up from first letter from each one. Anyway back to topic- Sun Microsystems today launched its own answer to the LAMP stack “ The GlassFish Portfolio”, which it termed "the most complete, open source, high-performance Web platform" available. That’s a very good news, since Sun GlassFish Portfolio is open source and cost-effective, and could help companies looking to run low-cost, scalable applications.

GlassFish In addition, it includes the GlassFish Web Stack, made up of the Apache Foundation’s Tomcat, a lightweight server for executing Java commands or Servlets on a Web server; Memcached, a system used by YouTube and others for distributing data across multiple Web servers; Squid, a proxy server that captures and caches repeated requests; and Lighttpd, a secure, high-speed Web server. The stack is designed to support Java, Ruby, and PHP platforms.

Don’t get your hopes go down yet, there is plenty more in there. The portfolio also includes the GlassFish Web Space Server, a portal software set that reflects Sun’s decision to combine its portal development team with the Liferay open source project.

Sun also announced a GlassFish communications server, which is open source foundation for multimedia applications. This server, which was jointly developed with Ericsson, will let service providers create and offer VoIP, instant messaging and other interactive and multimedia applications

So all these are good, now let’s cut to the chase and get down to the wallet talk. The GlassFish Portfolio comes in four flavours- Basic ($999), Silver ($2999), Gold ($5999) and Platinum ($8999). Well those were the base price without any twists, so if you like to know the twists that might/will increase the costs, take a pick at sun’s official pricing.
