Intel pulling out from Philippines?
What could have been worse for Philippines’ tech industry than Intel Corp., the world’s top chip maker is considering pulling out of the country. Intel’s factory in Cavite which employing more than 3,000 people, is Intel’s second offshore assembly operations centre in Asia and also serves as a test site. According to Intel source, they invested around 1.51 billion dollars in the country while high power costs are a problem in the Philippines. According to many industry experts this is part of an eventual pullout from the Philippines. Though according to Intel spokesman it will take at least six months for Intel to decide whether to keep on running the factory, but as you can guess there is nothing for certain here. Intel is one of the biggest investors in the Philippine electronics industry. Electronics are the country’s top export, accounting for two-thirds of goods shipped overseas. Rumours have been circulating 2005 that Intel had already made a decision to pack up and leave the Philippines after the year 2010. Ticketing goes mobile
Acquired in a management buyout in 1987, Go North East is the founding company of the Go-Ahead Group. Go North East is now the largest bus operator in the North East of England. Now bus passengers using Go North East are now able to order and receive tickets by mobile phone, very fancy right? Well North East bus giant claims its scheme of selling bus tickets by mobile phone is first in UK. Launched this week following a trial late last year, the service, dubbed txt2go, enables passenger to text 60060 to receive their digital ticket in a matter of minutes. In order to travel, they simply need to show it to the driver when boarding, reducing the amount of money being kept in the vehicle at any one time. Each ticket contains coded information and is locked to the handset it was ordered from to reduce forgery attempts and increase security. Well in here in Philippines travelers with domestic Philippine carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) can pay for their airline tickets via the 1,700 Megalink automated teller machines (ATMs) around the country after making their booking through CEB’s call centre or by text message (SMS). Manila’s Metro Rail Transit System,…
IPVG acquired Prolexic Technologies
Philippine’s booming IT and gaming group IPVG announced today it has acquired a Delaware-based IT security firm for $10.45 million, the latest acquisition in its aggressive expansion strategy. IPVG Corp., through its subsidiaries, operates in the information technology and telecommunications, online computer games, and business process outsourcing sectors in the Philippines. The company provides various Internet data center services. IPVG’s purchase of Prolexic Technologies Inc, which is basically an anti-virus company, comes just a few weeks after IPVG said it would buy around 70 percent stake in U.S.-based outsourcing group Interactive Teleservices Corp, or Influent. Influent, which operates 10 call centers in the United States, Panama and the Philippines, has average annual revenues of about $45 million, compared to IPVG’s estimated revenue over $24 million in 2007. About half of IPVG’s sales come from data services, 45 percent from gaming and 5 percent from outsourcing services, but it expects outsourcing revenues to accelerate from this year. In December, IPVG made a $355 million all-cash offer for Nasdaq-listed PeopleSupport but the U.S.-headquartered outsourcing firm reject the bid. IPVG has said it was still interested in buying the firm. IPVG, with a market value of around $117 million, has operations in the…
