System requirements:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
So that means if you are using anything older than Pentium 4 or similar class you have to change processor & obviously the mother board, to run Vista.
1 GB of system memory.
But as I saw in RC1 & RC2 better if it’s above 1.5 GB
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum), Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel.
Those who are using ATI X1600 or similar can just upgrade the Vista compatible driver from here. In fact RC2 works with 64MB but Aero style won’t work if it’s less than 128 MB.
40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
Well you all know you need practically above 80 GB hard drive & above 20 GB free space for smooth run.
DVD-ROM Drive.
Well since they are launching both CD & DVD version I guess this requirement will fluctuate on what version you buy.
Audio output capability.
This is nonsense requirement, since you really don’t need it if you do not wish sound.
Internet access capability.
You need it and better be at least 128KBps, since Vista will upgrade, fix patches through Microsoft One care and expect it to be bigger files that what used to be in XP.
If you are using shared memory, beware since Vista takes up quite big space in memory unless you disable the Aero function. So better at least upgrade your computer’s memory if you want smooth ride with Vista.
Upgrade Issue from XP to Vista
Your upgrade options are dependent on the version of Windows that is currently running on your PC. Below is some information to help you start planning for an upgrade to Windows Vista.

Software/Application Compatibilities:
This issue is serious, since Windows Vista is 80% different from whatever version of XP you are running, needless to say if you are running something else. Not all of your favorite application will run in Windows Vista. Since Vista’s core access is restricted (Will only be accessible to certain Microsoft sponsored security software like-Norton, MacAfee etc.). So I think if you are planning to switch or upgrade to vista, very good time to think about Vista compatibility of applications. Even some of Microsoft old application won’t function properly with windows Vista. Few notable programs that will run under vista (may need to upgrade from the relevant web)-
ATI software/application
NVIDIA applications
HP applications
MacAfee (Not yet released for Vista, but work in progress)
Norton (Same like MacAfee, still work in progress for Vista compatibility)
Corel (Wordperfect Office X3 onward), Adobe
Most of the games that released after XP, will work except for those which uses DOS interfaces/platform. Bellow WinZip 9.0 version won’t work, as well as In RC2 couldn’t get to work Registry Mechanic and a whole lot of other applications like zone alarm and so. Probably after Vista pops out we might see some serious upgrade in popular applications, to get compatible to Vista.
