Screaming Mobile Phone-Behold

Mobile phone/ device stolen become increasingly threatening to mobile users through out the world. Large number of African crime syndicate created a vast stolen mobile market that gain over $250 million per year. The priority problem is not the mobile/device stolen, but the personal, financial data stored in there. Until now most of the carrier company can lockdown the phone, if reported stolen (if well within the signal/operational range), but still crooks can deactivate or download the stored data into computer using simple application.

But a U.K. company hopes a cell phone security system it has developed will halt an escalation in mobile theft. The system sets off a high pitch screaming sound, permanently locks the handset and wipes all data if reported stolen.

They are calling this “Remote XT Technology”. The Remote XT technology, designed to make mobile unusable and therefore valueless if they are stolen, works by installing software onto the operating system of the device that can be activated via a call to a call center once users realize their phone has been snatched or missing. The phone is then remotely disabled, all the data held on it is wiped and a high-pitched screech is triggered. The screaming noise can be stopped by taking out the mobile’s battery but starts again as soon as it is put back in; replacing the SIM card has no effect, since the software is within the OS of the mobile. The system also automatically backs up data held on a device once a day, meaning users can reload their information onto a replacement handset.

The software currently works only on "smart phones" that run operating systems such as Symbian or Windows Mobile. But it is expected to be suitable for the majority of mobile phones within two years as mobile technology advances. Currently it will cost 9.99 GBP/month to use this system.
