I don’t know about you guys, but I was definitely looking forward to a terabyte hard drive, as i play a lot of games and tired of switch PC-laptop. But honestly didn’t expect Hitachi to be the man company to bring it out first. Yesterday Hitachi Global Storage Technologies unveiled what it says is the industry’s first 1TB hard drive. The Nickname for this hard drive has been chosen “Deskstar 7K1000″.

The Deskstar 7K1000 (The name should already tell you, it made for desktop) offers users a high storage capacity that allows them to store their games, movies, photos and music at the same time also providing them with increased drive protection via a ramp load design that decreases the risk of shock damage(which we have seen in some latest Laptop hard drives).

To go along with the Deskstar 7K1000, Hitachi will also launch a CinemaStar version 1TB hard drive, which will provide users with a way to store more data on their digital video recorders. The CinemaStar 7K1000 will also be able to retrieve up to 250 hours of high-definition programming. According to company statement the Deskstar 7K1000 will be available in the first quarter of 2007 at 750GB and 1TB capacities. The CinemaStar 1TB will be available in the second quarter of 2007. Though the price of Deskstar 7K1000 would almost same as buying a normal desktop, considering the 1TB drive announced priced at $399. There was no indication how much the Cinemastar will cost.

Same day, Hitachi also launched its AVSM software technology, which was designed for DVR applications to help extend the life of a hard drive. Did i said it will be included in Deskstar and Cinemastar version of Hard drive?

AVSM will be able to control several HDTV streams that exist in multiroom households while also having the following features:

  • Longer STB(et-top boxes) service life by lowering hard disk drive duty cycle
  • Enhanced quality of service
  • A streaming file system and I/O scheduler
  • The AVSM technology is available now and will soon be integrated into Hitachi products.

Looks like in 2007 Hitachi is holding quite a number of magic wand to impress consumers.
