Adobe’s new mobile show off
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has been full of surprises and innovations, every top notch companies were out there showing off what’s under their sleeve. Adobe systems didn’t hold back either, this week they launched two new mobile applications, Flash Home and Flash Cast 2, designed for providers that want to enhance their products with rich mobile content. Flash Home is a mobile application for creating customizable home screens and wallpapers using live data services. The combination gives users a more personalized mobile experience, said Adobe. For example, instead of an idle home screen, users would get instant access to more elaborate content branded by specific providers. In contrast, Flash Cast is a server push solution for mobile devices; version 2 has just been released. Unlike its predecessor, client 2.0 is more streamlined and faster; it also adapts its channels to your device better. Adobe Flash Cast is already licensed by various carriers worldwide, including US Verizon Wireless, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, and China’s Chunghwa Telecom. All three uses the application to provide rich media through their customized content portals. Both of these top notch solutions are branched from The Adobe Mobile Platform, the new Flash platform for mobile devices. The…
Banning from the web, is just ridiculous
Next week United Kingdom legislators are proposing a new law under which surfers who illegally download films and music will be cut off from the Internet. This proposed Green Paper, which the Government is due to disclose, sometime next week, will require ISP’s to take action against the estimated six million users a year who access pirated material. The law is expected to propose a ‘three-strike’ system, similar to that already in place in the US and France. Users suspected of illegally downloading films or music (Shouldn’t this be All copyrighted material) will receive a warning e-mail for the first offence, a suspension for the second infringement and the termination of their Internet contract if caught a third time. So the picture we can draw from here is—“Suspected illegal music and video content sharing” will be penalized. Question is who will decide whether the suspect is in fact did commit the crime? I am sure the legislators are not suggesting handing down badges to ISP’s to become cyber police. On the other hand in order to ISPs to know that you are downloading illegal files to your computer would require them to have access to personnel information on your computer,…
LiMo’s giant leap towards future
While Sony Ericsson closing a partnership with Microsoft to run Windows mobile on their phones, some of the biggest mobile brand decided to follow Google’s path to open source the Mobile OS. The world’s second largest mobile phone maker Samsung and LG Electronics showed new phones using free Linux software from Mobile Linux foundation, which said in total 18 phones from seven vendors, would use its software. This isn’t first time for Samsung using Linux. They used Linux in its phones in 2006, launched new SGH-i800 phone model running on LiMo software at the Mobile World Congress trade show, while LG Electronics showed a prototype phone LG LiMo. The Linux operating system has so far had little success on mobile but its presence is increasing with LiMo rolling out its software platform, boosting the speed of new models reaching the market. You guys already know by now that Google is also using Linux to build its Android platform on. In case if you are wondering, Linux is the most popular type open source operating system these days. Linux suppliers earn money selling improvements and technical services, and Linux competes directly with Microsoft, which isn’t free at all. Well off course…
Nokia’s N-Gage evolving
Mobile giant Nokia has begun its second phase on handheld gaming dominance, with the launch of the N-Gage platform dedicated for gaming only. The company has shifted its approach, from focusing on a dedicated games system to titles which can be played on a range of Nokia devices. The N-Gage “First Access” process has been kick-started with N81 owners getting a preview of the download. This N-Gage First Access lets N81 owners download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application tryout and buy selected N-Gage games. Other N-Gage compatible devices will be added to the service in near future. N-Gage has the support of developers such as EA, Gameloft and Vivendi, who are making titles for the platform. Nokia’s first launched of N-Gage handset in 2003 was criticized for its design and poor sales led to the phone being quickly overhauled with new versions, including the QD. The primary target of the N-Gage device was to compete with the highly-successful Nintendo GameBoy, which off course didn’t even come closer. This alpha release of “First Access” could be the sign that Nokia is considering to evolve the N-Gage as a gaming platform rather than a device, which could be the turning…
Goodbye Adobe stock photos
Adobe Systems Inc. has announced plans to discontinue its Adobe Stock Photos service effective April 1, 2008. The service enables users of Adobe’s Bridge software to purchase royalty-free images for use in their work. It was introduced in 2005 when Adobe rolled out Creative Suite 2. “Adobe has decided to concentrate its efforts in other areas,” said the company in a statement posted to the Adobe Stock Photos Web site. In straighter wards-Adobe stock photos don’t bring us any money, the way our world class image editing software brings. It’s true that me and many of my colleagues use Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks almost every day but never used their stock photos service. Some of us though use similar sort of services, which they consider much more cost effective and rich in resources. I agree with those who thinks Adobe stock photos service just not up to the mark(ex. iStockPhoto and Getty Images) to gain a lead in that stock photography market. The service will remain fully operational until March 3, 2008. From then through the end of March, comp images will still be available for download. Adobe has posted instructions for users interested in purchasing or downloading images after…
Online collaboration tools: Series C
Groupware or collaboration software aims to help organize teamwork. Microsoft Project is one of the best-known project management apps, but not every business requires its power. A new generation of simpler, Web-based services can do the job. In our last two sets of collaboration tools review we featured four of the most outstanding free/partially free online collaboration app. Off course those aren’t the only tools that can make your collaboration up to the mark, there are a bunch of app/software out there which are free (Partial or full) and this list is growing every day. So here are my today’s picks: Wrike Wrike offers a bit less Web-based project management services than most of its competitors. The service moved out of beta test into public release less than a year ago. Features a TimeLine view, which displays Gantt charts, will definitely impress you. In this short lifespan they already manage to get attention of big fish like PCWorld, eWeek etc. Admit it, most of we collaborate our projects over hundreds of email, imagine the situation when you have 2-3 projects and mails are piling over on inbox-tracking them would be like finding needle in a hay stack. Wrike makes life…
Hosting choices made for you or made by you
Web hosting service isn’t something you can randomly pick, especially when your business hanging on the balance. There is free hosting as well as commercial hosting. What are some of the things you should look for when choosing a web host (I am sure dozens of factors available)? The factors for choosing a free web host and a commercial web hosting solution are slightly different although they do overlap. Choosing a host is an important decision. It’s wise to have a long relationship with whatever host you choose, in terms of money as well as hectic moving process. To make the decision you need to first decide what you need. In general most of we then visit the sites of several hosting providers (referred by a friend or colleague mostly) and evaluate what they have to offer in the light of requirements. But problem starts when your needs and satisfaction no way near to your friend/colleague’s one. In that case you have to search through the web for finding the right one for you. Or you can just simply go to web hosting choice, a great place to go to help with your decision making. These guys provide you a…
Cisco data centre architecture rework
Few days ago Cisco Systems, Inc announced an innovative family of data centre-class switching platforms, the Cisco Nexus Series, to meet customer demands for next-generation mission-critical data centres. As the data centre transitions to a more services-centric model, the network plays a pivotal role in orchestrating virtual IT resources and scaling workloads. The Cisco Nexus 7000 Series was designed with this environment in mind, delivering the infrastructure chapter of Cisco’s Data Centre 3.0 vision. The series is designed specifically for the data centre with improved airflow, integrated cable management, and resilient platform architecture. The product is designed around a lossless unified fabric capable of simultaneously forwarding storage, Ethernet, and IP traffic. Experts says this is an effort to reconstruct the data centre and cut expenses by creating what it calls a “unified fabric architecture” that seeks to converge the input/output (I/O) of servers into one pipe. The fabric scales performance linearly with each fabric module and is logically partitioned for efficient unicast and multicast traffic, making it ideally suited for market data video as well as collaboration applications. So we are looking at a whole new generation of hardware and software innovation from Cisco house: The Cisco Nexus Operating System…
Future of HTML is about to change
22 January 2008 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released the first public working draft of the HTML 5.0 specification. The official press release can be found here. Its taken nearly 11 months since work began on HTML 5.0 for this first public working draft to get released. Too slow! No that’s way faster compare to most of the W3C working group’s pace. Slow or fast at least this working draft is the milestone to the bright future ahead, especially future of dynamic web development. The key purpose of HTML 5.0 is to make it easier for developers to create dynamic content and it introduces tons of new elements to enable this. A final release of HTML 5.0 is still far and far away but off course the future is looking bright. The key new elements are: section represents a generic document or application section. It can be used together with h1-h6 to indicate the document structure. article represents an independent piece of content of a document, such as a blog entry or newspaper article. aside represents a piece of content that is only slightly related to the rest of the page. header represents the header of a section. footer…
